I first talked about starting a blog back in 2011 – something personal to jump start my creative juices again. But procrastination and excuses won. I convinced myself that side writing would detract from my work writing, editing, proofreading, etc. End of story … or so I thought.
Fast forward to 2015 and that voice in my head started up again. And this time it wasn’t taking “no” for an answer: “Start a blog, damn it! Yes, you can write web/brochure/ad copy, edit other people’s blogs, whatever else it is you do – BUT you need to write for you! If you don’t … don’t make me list all the bad things that can happen to you.” Yes, I talk to myself like this … a … lot …
I started mulling it over, planning, thinking about “topics” – because that is what Type A people like myself do. We plan, weigh the pros and cons, and analyze the risk. What were my risks?
My Top 5 Reasons Not to Write
- You have nothing to say or nothing to say that matters (matters to whom I wasn’t sure).
- You are a content editor now, not a writer.
- What if you have typos, misspellings, run-on sentences, etc.? You’ll die a public, shameful death!
- You are over 30 – do people over 30 write blogs?
- Blogging will cut into your The Mindy Project watching time, nap time on Sunday afternoons, or [insert any other procrastinating yet “fun” item here].
Whether these reasons are right or wrong, here I am – writing. Writing for me. Writing about what I’m reading and how it relates to my life. Writing about my travels (next on my bucket list is Seattle, San Francisco, Ireland, New Zealand) and how these experiences changed my life (for good or bad). My goal is to re-inspire myself. Is there such a thing? I hope so.
